Augusta IHC Rhabdomyolysis Medical Incident 2022

  • Incident Information:

  • Location:

    Virginia
  • Date:

    04/14/2022
  • Incident Type:

    Medical or Exertion
  • Description:

A crewmember on the Augusta Interagency Hotshot Crew (IHC) was diagnosed with Rhabdomyolysis (Rhabdo) after four days into their “80 critical hours” of mandatory training for IHCs at their home base. Because the EMT and crew superintendent had a general working knowledge of Rhabdo and its impacts on wildland firefighters—and because they took decisive action—they were able to get the crewmember immediate medical care. He was admitted to the hospital with extreme levels of creatine phosphokinase (CK) in his urine.
