Bald Mountain Fire Hit by Tree Fatality 1929

Forest Service employee Archie White was assigned to the Bald Mountain Fire, Selway National Forest, Idaho, when he was struck and killed by a green tree. The tree which struck White had broken when struck by another tree which had been undermined by fire and fell. White was struck on the head and died instantly. White's body was transported by stretcher 15 miles up the Lochsa River to the Powell Ranger Station. White was also a well known logger in Western Montana.

In 1934 the Selway National Forest was divided between the Bitterroot, Clearwater, Lolo, and Nez Perce National Forests. The Bald Mountain Fire occurred on what is now the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest.
