Bell Springs Fire Vehicle Accident Fatality 1931

John Homer, a construction worker in Laytonville, California, was killed in a vehicle accident while positioning his car to assist with fire suppression. Homer and a friend were traveling Bell Springs Road in rural Mendocino County at night when they were stopped along the road by a fire crew and directed to help fight the fire. While Homer attempted to the turn the car around and park on the narrow road, the car slid off the road on a steep hillside. Homer's companion was able to jump clear, but Homer was killed in the accident. Whether Homer and his companion were driving to the fire area to assist or came upon it by accident is not readily available.
