    James Shine, a volunteer firefighter for the US Forest Service, passed away on a remote part of the 4,900-acre Pony Peak Fire near Cottage Grove, California (south of Happy Camp), on the Klamath National Forest. Shine had been among 75 volunteers brought by bus from Klamath Falls, Oregon, to assist fighting the fire in Northern California. He died of an apparent heart attack. Shine's body was transported by mule to the road, a route which included a stretch of trail specially constructed by fellow firefighters.
